If headlights are of the right type and properly aligned, then visibility is maximised for both the driver of that vehicle and those in any oncoming traffic: more of the road can be seen, blinding can be avoided and reaction times are improved. Brake lights are important too; the safety of drivers following behind depends on their reliability and visibility.
Lamps must therefore meet predetermined specifications in order to deliver the necessary safety standards. However, there are also a number of qualities that can be enhanced or adapted to meet different needs while still working within the overall tolerances, and this has lead to the development of ranges of sub-types offering enhanced performance in particular areas.
This choice enables car owners to ‘upgrade’ their lighting, choosing, for instance, a light with a long service life, or a premium type with a higher luminance which allows for a better illumination, or a lamp with a higher colour temperature (bluer) which may be more efficient at night particularly for tired or older drivers. The important thing though is that regulations restrict this choice to authorised lamps only, ensuring that lighting conforms to the necessary safety specifications.
